Dominic Sandivasci, managing director of Pirelli Tyre Ltd comments:
“We’re delighted to be able to demonstrate our commitment to improving road safety through our involvement in the Young Driver initiative. The Pirelli name is synonymous with the high performance and safety characteristics of its products, and as part of our extensive Corporate Social Responsibility programme we are keen to support organisations that share our goal of making the road a safer place.

Ground Breaking Young Driver Safety Initiative Goes Nationwide

01/02/2010

The already hugely successful Young Driver programme is coming to Bluewater, Europe’s leading retail and leisure destination, and London later this month.

Organisers believe that this world-class road safety concept will significantly reduce road accidents and save lives. Further venues are also set to open in Glasgow and Manchester in the spring, following a fully booked pilot programme in Birmingham.

This revolutionary new safe driving education programme helps teach 11-16 year-olds the craft of driving carefully. Research shows that accident rates among young qualified drivers are slashed by as much as 40% if they’re exposed to driving tuition before they begin formal driving lessons.

Sponsored by Admiral MultiCar and SEAT UK, Young Driver teaches youngsters to drive dual-controlled cars in a safe and measured environment. Professional Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs) have been amazed how focussed and determined the new learners have been, showing unprecedented commitment in taking their driving seriously.  Using 200 new SEAT Ibiza 1.2 S models and specially designed driving zones, the experience has been a massive hit with both the young drivers and parents. Lessons start at just £29 including VAT.

Piloted at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre three months ago, more than 1,000 under 17s have already been trained and there has been universally positive feedback.

Young Driver opens to the public for the first time at Bluewater on Sunday 21st February and at London on Saturday 27th of February. Bookings can be taken from later today, 1st February, on the website www.youngdriver.eu or by telephone on 0844 371 9010.

Bluewater, General Manager, Andrew Parkinson, ‘We are delighted to support the Young Driver initiative.  It is an important educational and safety programme and further underlines Bluewater’s commitment to supporting the local community’.

Motoring Journalist, Quentin Willson also approves: ‘I’ve just put my 11 year-old son on the programme and I’ve never seen him concentrate so hard. This is a road safety revolution in the making.’

Admiral MultiCar, Marketing Director, Charlotte Bennett, believes the programme is industry-leading: ‘As a major car insurer in the UK we are confident Young Driver will make a huge difference to accident rates among new drivers and are proud to see the project going national.’

SEAT, Head of Marketing, Steve Robertson, commented: “The opportunity to support a scheme which not only promises such an exciting experience for young people, but also brings with it the chance to help prepare kids for life out on the open road when they move on to begin on-road driving lessons, is one we simply could not turn down.

Young Driver facts

Young Driver operates with some of the very best government Approved Driving Instructors in the country so parents can be assured their children are getting the very best tuition possible.

Driving sessions are available to children over 1.5 metres (4’ 11”) tall, between the ages of 11 and 16, and are offered in 30- or 60-minute lessons during weekends and school holidays.

After the first lesson, young drivers are given a Drive Diary filled in by their instructor. This allows pupils, parents and instructors to chart individual progress and focus on new skills.

1,000 local under 17’s book driving lessons in a new initiative to cut road deaths

27/01/2010

Just two months after the SEAT Young Driver sponsored by Admiral MultiCar programme launched at The National Exhibition Centre, they have clocked up their 1,000th lesson.

The Young Driver programme has been designed to give 11-16 year olds the opportunity to drive in a safe and controlled environment. A similar scheme in Sweden reduced accidents by 40%.

With one in five UK young drivers crashing within the first six months of passing their test, the initiative has been welcomed by West Midlands Police and road safety experts alike.

Janet Mills, of Young Driver said: “we knew that Young Driver would be popular but we couldn’t have predicted the massive demand for lessons. We have had to add extra days to accommodate the high level of interest.”

Now on his third lesson, 1000th driver, Ben Chick, said: “I think it’s fantastic! I never thought I’d be able to drive until I was 17.”

Ben’s parents, Alison and David, believe Ben’s lessons have not only been great fun, but a huge investment in his future safety and wellbeing.

Ben ChickThey commented, “Young Driver has given Ben a sense of achievement and responsibility which we would not have been able to deliver.  We will be far more relaxed when he does make those first forays on to the roads”.

Due to demand, the programme is planning to launch two new driving venues in London and Kent. Much like The NEC, these new venues will offer safe driving environments for 11-16 year olds and hospitality for parents and guardians.

Students take their lessons in sporty new SEAT Ibiza models fitted with dual controls, under the watchful eyes of some of the UK’s best Approved Driving Instructors.

Lessons are available to any young person aged between 11 and 16, and over 1.5 metres tall. Prices start at just £29.

Snowbound? Snow way!

26/01/2010

The Ice Age might have arrived in the UK but the icy conditions didn’t put a skid on the Young Driver days at The NEC on the 9th and 10th of January.

We didn’t have to put the days on ice, instead we picked up our cars and the Routemaster hospitality bus, and drifted to warmer and drier conditions – The NEC’s Hall 16!

With no black ice or treacherous weather conditions inside, the young drivers could enjoy their lessons snow-free.

Snow problem! Thank you to The NEC staff for making this possible.
